I found it to be a lifesaver when staying up late at night in my dorm room, since the light would shine only in my direction and wouldn't bother my sleeping roommate. It cuts down on glare that tends to happen with a lot of textbooks that have glossy-type pages. It didn't hurt my eyes too much, and its size is small and compact - perfect for saving space on a desk.
