I bought the NEC 90GX2 just as they came out... at full retail. Ouch. I sure wish Amazon had them available back then! But I went to Fry's, and gave 'em a CF card with some really challenging photos to display on their monitor wall display... maybe 50 monitors up there. Some photos had lots of fiddly detail, some had details in nearly saturated colors... some had smooth gradations of color.
In short, it was a torture test for those poor monitors.
I'm an aspiring photographer, and I NEED a precise screen, one which can show the photos as they will print, not 'juiced' colors, or pushed to brightness at the expense of blown out highlights and other details. The photos were shots that I had taken, and seen on my old monitor, and seen printed out... I knew them well enough to know where monitors usually failed.
The result? Most of the monitors looked bad with one image or another. You know that Windows sample photo of the sand dune? Some monitors can't even show the ripples in the dunes... well, only one monitor could show the range of color and detail on my CF card... the 90GX2.
They had just gotten them in, knew nothing about them. They sold four of them right then and there; I got mine and three other people standing there were so blown away they bought 'em on the spot. At full price, yet.
Go to a store that sells monitors, and take a memory card from your camera. Take the prints of the photos with you as well. Ask them to put your card in their computer, and compare the monitors.
Hopefully they'll have a 90GX2 there for you to see. Then come back here and buy one off of Amazon! :)
But beware: The "Opticlear" screen surface is smooth like a mirror, not matte like frosted glass... it will reflect lights that are behind you onto the screen. If you cannot place the screen in an area that can avoid this, you may be unhappy... I'm in love.
