OK, for $14 you shouldn't expect much, and my expectations were VERY modest. But still. In order to use the magnifier so it's actually illuminated under the lamp means you need to twist the stalks of the lamp, and the magnifying lens, in a pretzel-like configuration. I ended up with the back of the lamp (cord end) facing me, but at least the lens was under the lamp (somewhat) and therefore anything beneath the lens was 1) magnified, and 2) bright enough to see. But then I come to my most dismal discovery: the magnifying lens was cloudy, with a rainbowed puddle spread across its width, as if covered with machine oil. I tried Windex first, and when that didn't eliminate the issue I switched to isopropyl alcohol. Nope, that didn't work either. Then my epiphany! The clouded, foggy, oil-slicked discoloration is IN THE GLASS. Oh. Great. So no removing it then. Is it worth boxing this thing back up, hauling it to post office, standing in line for a minimum of 45 minutes and spending no less than $15 to send it back? No. But I can certainly warn anyone else who is thinking of purchasing this lamp to not waste their time or money. The lamp itself is fine, takes a standard 60 watt bulb, and will come in handy down the road for extra illumination at some point. But the hood, which is uninsulated, gets burning hot, as you might imagine. You know what? Seriously, just learn from me and don't buy this thing.
